About the Artist

Matin Malikzada

A seventh-generation Afghan master potter and humanitarian refugee recently resettled in the US, Matin Malikzada is inspired by ancient techniques handed down through the centuries. In Kabul, he led the Ceramics department at the Turquoise Mountain Institute, an NGO founded by King Charles III, where he honed the skills inherited from his father, revitalized the nearly lost art of Istalifi pottery, and trained over one hundred artisans in its distinctive symmetrical designs and natural turquoise glazes.

Our collaboration with him features shapes and glazes exclusive to us. As each piece is made by hand, no two are exactly alike, and small variations in glaze and size make each one unique.

From preparing the clay to perfecting the form to mixing and applying the glaze, each step in my process expresses a humble desire to create pieces that enhance an everyday meal or celebration, or simply stir a moment of reflection.
